Rapid identification of some pathogenic E. coli can be accomplished in basic microbiology laboratories by easy tests such as slide agglutination using anti-OK or anti-adhesin sera. The EcL offers a range of sera for identification of the most commonly encountered OK serogroups in pigs and calves. Also, since, 1980, the EcL culture collection consisting of reference E. coli strains as well as over 10,000 E. coli clinical isolates from various animal species, mostly pigs, has been built up. Many of these strains have been characterized and are available upon request.
