Submit a sample
Our services include pathotyping of the E. coli population in a sample, which may be from a sick animal, from the environment, foods, or many other diverse sources. We can further identify the E. coli strains from these samples by virotyping, serotyping, and pulsetyping. If you are interested in submitting samples, please print our Sample Submission Form, complete it and return it to us together with the samples.
A brief history (clinical signs, animal species, age, sex, origin of the sample) will help us in the choice of virulence factors to test, interpretation of the results, and for epidemiological purposes.
If you are submitting isolates from a country other than Canada, you will require a permit for entry of the isolate(s) into Canada. The application for this permit will be made by the EcL, based on the information obtained from you, and is usually received within a week of the application. The cost for obtaining this permit (35 CDN $) will be added to the price. Please contact our technical service for more information.
Enclose samples individually in leak-proof containers able to withstand shipping.
Samples can be sent to the laboratory by mail or courier, or can be hand-delivered. As much as possible, samples should be sent early in the week, to avoid being in transit during the weekend. Do not ship samples to arrive on holidays.
For specific Canada Post and courier regulations, refer to their websites.
Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information or to discuss the possibility of special pricing if you wish to test a larger number of samples or virulence factors in herd problems, in vaccine control tests, etc.
